Mastodon is neat because I can recognize users and even though we don't generally chat, favorites and stuff are day-brightening

also it fills the "screaming into the void" void

A long and fascinating article on Ken Liu and his translations of of works by Chinese SF writers. It also goes into some details on how he navigates the translations of political statements that Chinese writers may obscure in their writings to get past the censors.

We really need to stop normalizing corporations "taking inspiration from modders and fan communities" and acknowledge that what's actually happening is a multi-million dollar company taking what someone made for free and monetizing it to their advantage

While paying them nothing at all, might I add.

This is specifically @ Nintendo and their recent treatment of @/mcc@mastodon.social, but this applies to all corporations that insist they're just "taking user suggestions"

What we are seeing isn't fandom being respected. It's the opposite. Nintendo and other companies want to steal unpaid labor from the people who love their games enough to create content around them.

Fuck you, pay artists.

Fuck you, pay programmers.

Fuck you, pay your unofficial employees.

PG is treating obsession as something you can harness ("ten tips to become great, #7: obsess over something"), and initially I was thinking, no way, that's not how it works for manic people—they obsess over something for the satisfaction of expertise, not because it'll get them anywhere.

(Like kids and video games.)

(Like adults and video games.)

But, maybe you can obsess over something you're not suited to. (I studied music and dance before realizing I lacked some necessary biology.)
