A friend just mentioned they want an app to unlock their door.
My mind went like this
@maloki fortunately for them there are entire companies dedicated to this product line
@fluffy well yes, but can we trust them?
@maloki domestic locks are only as strong as the door jamb anyway.
If I were to buy a smart lock I’d probably go with an August but that’s a pretty remote “if.”
@fluffy yeah there's a lot of aspects to consider
@maloki I do like the use case of it for AirBnB hosts in a world where AirBnB hosts weren’t predatory shitbags.
Also the use case of letting in pet sitters and cleaners and whatever.
But yeah trusting door lock safety to {{the cloud}} is always questionable at best.
@maloki sitting in a motel on the other side of the country for work, reading up on the recent Internet o' Stuff™ breach, company has mysteriously shuttered and suspended services. My door is unlocked.
@maloki My neighbor uses a different service - at first it was just an up-front fee to buy the lock, but now "to cover server costs" they need to pay $10 a month to unlock their own front door.
@maloki oh wait nope, turns out they don't require any super secret code to be sent to the lock to unlock it, it's literally just the same 5 digit number sent over an unencrypted connection for every single smart lock of that brand. they are being robbed, no, *TURBO* robbed as we speak.
@maloki netflix take my fucking black mirror scripts, work deserves compensation
