Fediverse, I have an open-ended for you: What does mean to you? I do mean this on a personal level, but take this where you like. It's just something I'm pondering, and I'd like to hear other people's thoughts.

@lapis Obvious math jokes aside, do you mean specifically gender identity or like, more on a philosophical level?

Public

@hikaruaikawa I guess I'd say, if you were asked to define yourself, how would you?
I could see this being gender, race, ethnicity, language, etc. But I feel like this could go beyond that.

Public

@lapis Well, I personally define myself VERY heavily in terms of my interests and hobbies. Videogames, in particular, but also maths and programming, etc. I think those are what play the biggest role in making me the person I am.

Public

@lapis I guess I’d say I’m defined by the people I surround myself with.
It seems... cheesy, but I suppose it’s true.

I wouldn’t use gamer (big or little G) to refer to myself. I’d much rather be called someone who enjoys video games.

I call myself a writer, but the most I’ve ever written is bits and pieces of stories that have the possibility of never being released.

My mom wants me to be a musician, but that’s just a hobby for me.

If I had to sum it up in three words; white cis idiot.

Quiet public

@lapis the summary of my whole existence, i would say. probably why sexuality and gender (especially) can be a bit hard to grasp for me identity-wise, because i've always been me, and however i've interpreted myself has always been a part of me.

but then you bring in the social construction of reality sorts of theories and things get even more complicated...

@lapis That's a really good question. I think it's what makes me (or anyone) a unique individual, what defines me and what makes me myself, different from everyone else.
Identity constantly evolves though, it's not a fixed thing. It's "just" the sum of my experiences, and the resulting thoughts, opinions and ways I feel about some things (for the lack of a better way to express that).
Parts of my identity are shared with other people but not all of it.
