Author and broadcaster Manchán Magan, who died last week at age 55, wasn't sure, so he wrote a book about it, "Ninety-Nine Words for Rain (and One for Sun)." Here's an excerpt, which was published in the Irish Times. "The word for a sudden, heavy shower is spairn; as opposed to sprais, a sudden, heavy, spattering shower; or búisteog, which is simply a sudden shower; or múirling, a sudden heavy shower that moves like a wall of water; or liongar ceatha, a particularly nasty sudden shower; or tuile shléibhe, a sudden shower near a hillside," he writes. Cassana 🍻Today I realised that in bamanankan (AKA Bambara) mǔn (what) and mǔnna (why) have a rising tone. So I got excited to see if all question words have essentially built in question inflection. Dǐ (how), yes! Jòli (how much), yes, though technically low-high. Sadly, min (where) has a high tone; mǐn with a rising tone means to drink. Also the question particle wà, placed at the end of a phrase, has a low tone. elilla&, sword lesbian arcI often complain about this re: English, where the problem is particularly bad, but it's really a general issue; early attempts of phonetic description (and IPA transcriptions) get canonised and continue to be widespread even when they're, ähm, wrong. I must have wasted hours trying to produce a [ʌ] for English and sounding nothing like any English dialect I've ever heard, until the day I discovered the STRUT vowel is actually simply a simple [ɐ], only it's noted as /ʌ/ because of "tradition". (some people describe GenAm as [ʌ̟] which is clearly "[ɐ] when you're in denial"). or learning that /i:/ /u:/ aren't [i:] [u:] for any native English speaker at all but in fact [ij], [uw] diphthongs, or the Mandarin "retroflex" /ʂ/isn't retroflex at all but simply backed into post-alveolar, or that the Germany German /ʀ/ is only ever a [ʀ] in exceptional, emphatic circumstances (e.g. when you ask "how do you pronounce this?"), and the standard realisation is actually [ɣ].so it's kinda baffling that outdated transcriptions and, distressingly often, flat-out misunderstandings and mistakes (plus, in the case of English, early theories long since abandoned) continue to be repeated religiously just because they sound technical and fancy and are "the traditional transcription".now you might be thinking, "isn't it like the entire point of the IPA to accurately represent articulation because general alphabets originally did that but they get outdated due to the weight of 'tradition', and to have such a thing as 'traditional IPA transcription' defeats the whole purpose?" to which the answer is: "lol", Gandalf said. Toxy 🔬🇪🇺🇸🇪🇬🇧🇺🇦I’m not an expert on <a href="https://mastodon.acc.sunet.se/tags/Linguistics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Linguistics</a> although I am fascinated by it and I think as a Brit, albeit now living abroad, there is no phrase that so quintessentially typifies British understatement more than the phrase “a spot of bother” as it almost always refers to a catastrophe of biblical proportions. I would love to hear about equivalents in other languages; I am sure British English does not have a monopoly on staid understatement.

I have a dumb question.There are a lot of words that are antonyms, but I wonder how many of them have a singular point of origin.For instance, Michael Jackson's "Bad" sort of popularized the concept of "bad" being "good" or "cool", but I don't think he was the point of origin, he was just a super spreader.I'm looking for ones that have a SINGLE POINT OF ORIGIN. Like a linguistic mitochondrial eve, a single moment where a word's use flipped on it's head.
