Hey netizens, please, *please* stop doing unpaid marketing work for YouTube by embedding their videos on your websites. I understand continuing to upload videos there to reach the large audience that already use it, but that doesn't mean you have to link to them. If you also upload your videos on a #PeerTube instance, or some other more independent video host, and embed those on your sites, you can help to grow the audience for ethical video hosting networks.
Striking Workers Are Bringing Back 1970s "Mindfuck" Tactics
"Deliveroo and UberEats riders, [...] are masters of the mindfuck. Because they’re technically self-employed, the laws on strike action and trade unions don’t apply to them. That means that the slow bureaucracy of postal ballots and turnout thresholds designed to prevent workers from taking collective action goes out the window. Instead, these workers can just do what makes sense to them. The result has been an explosion in militancy, as the platforms try to cut their workers’ already-low wages. Strikes are now breaking out every couple of weeks with little or no prior notice. They’re organised through complex networks of encrypted messenger chats which are completely invisible to platform bosses, meaning that all their standard management techniques need to be rewritten."
This Thanksgiving, remember to be thankful for your GM.
Trying to set up a streaming device using #OpenBSD because it's what I know how to manage disks on, but ffmpeg is crushing my cpus. Can I make this more efficient without throwing 20+ cores at it?
Labor under capitalism IS NOT CONSENSUAL; it is coerced through the systemic threat of homelessness and hunger.
Yes, people must labor to survive and thrive in nature. But capitalism makes it so we must labor for an "owner," to create profit for them (surplus/unpaid labor) in return for a wage, instead of laboring for ourselves and our communities. This is an inherently exploitative process. Since we have no leverage (by design, through underemployment & unemployed - Marx's "reserve army of labor"), we must accept whatever wage we can get. And capitalists constantly seek to drive down wages and/or automate labor, leaving us in a perpetual state of precariousness.
psa for other white folks
You know where a lot of the bad stuff hides, even when you feel like you're not "one of those" white folks? It's in your ideas about a) what is and is not a problem, b) who gets to decide what is and is not a problem, c) who gets to decide the "appropriate" way to address or talk about a problem. For starters.
You gotta keep looking there. You'll keep finding stuff. That's good. That's the work. You didn't put it there. It doesn't make you a bad person. But it's your shit, and it's still your job to shovel it out.
If you don't want to do the work because you feel guilty and angry and defensive, then you're (at best) surrendering to the system that put that shit in you. In all of us.
Everybody has a role in dismantling systemic injustice. Everybody has internalized it. Everybody has to fight the wrong-ass shit we've inherited, inside of ourselves and out. White folks have a specific role in that. When you accept that role and start trying to fulfill it, you'll probably stop feeling "attacked" by other people's suffering.
Works for me, anyway.
