The original Elite is a great example of a procedurally generated place becoming meaningful, to the degree that Lave is referenced in other fiction. Even other games, where it obviously has to be added by hand, on purpose. is not the issue.

Are you interested in a federated alternative to Goodreads that doesn't use Amazon?

because I'm making a federated alternative to Goodreads that doesn't use Amazon

If people want an open network, stop shit-talking open things

I hear tech folks saying that RSS is dead, and people on social media saying that blogs are dead.

The problem with this is twofold:

- RSS is doing just fine, and not even remotely dead

- Blogs are doing just fine, and are not even remotely dead, either

There's this strange sort of defeatism around. "Well, we lost, so what can you do". Um, not undermine things that still work and are actively being used? Support them as well?

Don't get me wrong - I'm very much against the current state of copyright law, and I believe that a culture that can't own and iterate on its own works is a fatally unhealthy one, but geeze, acknowledging whose shoulders/coat tails you're riding on is still important

In related news, I seem to have gained a level in Python and can now casually use a generator where it makes sense.

I understand and like the prototype-based inheritance of JS or Lua (unlike most programmers, it seems). That said, a class construct is better at signaling intent. You don't have to look at a function and go, "oh, this is meant to act as a constructor".

Unit tests are overrated.

Automated testing is good and cool and important but the value comes from testing the full integration of your project. Unit testing isnt that useful in the majority of your codebase.

This would probably be a better place if you could mute someone for an hour or two instead of always having to block someone FOREVER FOR THEIR SINS.

Blog post dunking on Dawkins latest bad tweet

@notimetoplay I suspect that if you spend all your time around other rich white people in an academic ivory tower that everyone else just becomes an abstract problem to be solved.

Blog post dunking on Dawkins latest bad tweet

Fucking Dawkins must have seen the latest news about that new adviser and he gone and posted something stupid again.

@pzmyers has just posted a good blog post about this going into some details about how shite eugenics is.

i wrote about tools! lots of cool tools!
my new post about the wonderful world of tools made by small teams, solo-devs, and shareware...
weird, beautiful, and experimental things to be creative in
a lot of these are relevant to gamedev

Hello, everyone! Issue #307 of my newsletter is out, with much talk of and game genres in general, but also some politics, and plans for the future. Enjoy!

I'd say it's not just acceptable, but very important to have fiction that lets people explore their fantasies in a safe environment. And the fact that a piece of fiction does that doesn't say anything else about its quality.

There are more and less responsible ways of going about that, of course, but the idea itself is a good one.

Here's a write up of five games that I drew inspiration from and how they influenced Hive Time's development: SimCity, Dune II, Flotilla, Spacebase DF-9, and MASSIVE CHALICE.

And by the way, look who's comparing politics to the choice of which fast-food to pick today: the ultra-rich white dude who's never in any danger to be a victim of war, bigotry or neo-liberal economic policies.

If you stick to the POSIX space you can write a lot of software that's durable and portable.

It might also be awful for other reasons, but it's likely to stay as awful as it ever was, rather than actively getting worse as your dependencies mutate and rot around you.
