See, okay, Snoke makes me miss Palpatine. Snoke makes the mistake that all the terrible evil lords make - self-aggrandizement. He beats up on Kylo Ren and fosters resentment. Palpatine was Anakin/Vader's friend right up until he thought he could do better with Luke.

It is possible - I'm not sure - that this scene with Leia in her quarters is the first time we see hyperspace from the /side/.

If Leia's going to get to use the Force once in the series, I'm glad she made it a good one. She knew it was coming, she prepared herself, and she navigated herself back to where she needed to be.

I can't believe R2D2's been holding onto that message from Leia for 20 years.

Also, I feel like "only 400 people across 3 vessels" is trying to invoke Battlestar Galactica, but regardless: this just feels unreasonably lopsided. Like, the First Order was supposed to be a splinter group of the Empire that never acknowledged its defeat, and they fired /one shot/ and took out the Senate, and suddenly the Empire's back in charge again and the Republic doesn't exist anymore? This seems really bizarre.

@noelle It weirded me out at first too, but given it's only hours/maybe days since TFA, I'm inclined to believe the First Order a) was hiding a fleet and b) is now taking advantage of the "wait, who's in charge? why were there superweapons?? and WHO'S IN CHARGE NOW???" that happened when they cut off the metaphorical head. I doubt much anyone who isn't involved with the Resistance even knows Starkiller Base went boom.

@noelle So I'm suspecting that it's less that the New Republic /suddenly/ doesn't exist and more that the Republic in general exists to the degree it can coordinate itself, and right now nobody knows what's going on except that the First Order suddenly blew up... at least one planet, I forget how many. Through hyperspace. And the Senate is gone, and presumably the executive head too, and who knows about any military leaders. (Not me.)

I hope for the plan's sake that Canto Bight is really close by.

@noelle I felt the same way even during TFA. The rebels won, the Empire is gone, but the storytellers want to reuse the basic framing so they just slot in a new Empire with zero explanation for how that happened. It really cheapens the victory at the end of RotJ.

@noelle Spouse and I were talking about that last night, actually. it's possible to come up with a scenario that makes the setup possible, but how it happened is never *mentioned*. it's like the worldbuilding is missing a couple of supporting pillars, and while you can imagine where they should be and how they'd fit... there's no sign that they actually canonically *exist*, and it's weird.

@noelle Yeah. The weird numbers thing was one of the three things I disliked about TLJ. They start out more outnumbered and outgunned than the Rebel Alliance ever was and by the end they're down to two fireteams on an ancient YT-1300.

@noelle I'm gonna say, I think Snoke is the post-grooming abuser. The "you are Vader's heir!" when Kylo pleases him, vs "U pathetic brat" when not. When he thinks he's in Kylo's mind (no assassinating the Master, brat!), & Kylo can't run back home ("Luke wanna kill you, & yer parents won't help you, plus only I understand your gothiness.")... Nah, it's abuser-mentality. Worked for a long time, too!

@noelle I tended to regard that detail as Luke being readier to confront his realities, rather than try to mask them.

TFA left this huge cliffhanger about his state.

Then literally hours later in timeline, his heroic transformation arc is now a punchline.

@noelle No, Rogue One is set before Ep IV - any character who could have survived from that time period would be Leia's age or older by Ep VIII.
