When someone says "oh, it's just a few bad apples" (about cops, etc.) remind them that the proverb isn't "it's just a few bad apples but everything else is fine"; the proverb is "a few bad apples /spoil the bushel/".
@noelle Also relevant: The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. The number of good apples is irrelevant when the whole tree is corrupt and poisonous.
@noelle It would be easier to get the metaphor right if the people with dodgy ethics emitted ethylene in high quantity.
