Suggestion: Mastodon should allow the use of backticks (`) to surround text that should be preformatted, preserving multiple spaces (even at the beginning of a line) and not interpolating usernames or hashtags (to allow the use of @ and #). https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/7433

@noelle on the one hand I'd *adore* preformatted text support, but on the other hand I really don't like markdown. It's a pity that Mastodon can't do control characters :thonking:
