What is ForkOff/Together? [correct links] Show more
@maloki I'm a fairly new Mastodon user, so there may well be a history here I'm not aware of, but as far as I can tell @Gargron has came across as willing to engage, and logical in his arguments for the "trending" feature, even if you may not agree with those arguments. Forking is of course fine if people don't like current direction, for instance greater community involvement in roadmap, which there may well be a case for, but yeah - the tone of this all just feels a little unpleasant.

@maloki Sure, as I said was aware there may be a deeper history I was un-aware of. I'll have a further read. :)

@maloki Was being polite and keeping open mind in my last message, as I'd (apparently mis-) read the tone of your response to me to be in the same vein, although on re-reading it was perhaps meant with passive aggression. I'd already read majority of the links in your thread (as well as entire GitHub thread), and now scrolled through the rest. I'll reiterate, while forking if you disagree with direction is fine, I think the tone of #forkoff towards @Gargron comes across disproportionally hostile

@maloki I tagged Gargron because that only seemed polite if I was referring to him, particularly in context of standing up for him against what read to me like unnecessarily unpleasant hostility. I don't consider that I'm expressing anything that should require a "content warning" and it's up to me how I present my words. If you consider differently, that is up to you for how you present yours. Anyway, genuinely thanks for taking time to respond. Will keep an open mind on the topic via timeline.
Why CWs on Discourse? Show more
@r0bbie just fyi, he told people to fork if they didn't like the current setup. People are. Hope that helps with your hostility concerns
@ratbaby Completely understand that, and that actually seems perfectly reasonable. One of the benefits of an open and federated network is that people can fork if they don't like the direction, by design. It's the tone that hashtag has taken (and of the origin GitHub issue) that felt unnecessarily unpleasant towards the developer, at least to me..

@maloki In the context of the GitHub thread (https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/7702) that, as far as I understand it, this whole debate (and the resultant hostility) spawns from, #forkoff comes across as pretty damn hostile towards the developer of this incredible federated social network.
