"Like, just say "I want my platform, because it's clearly mine, and not the userbase's, to work this way because it's the only way it'd make sense to me, and I do not care which users it harms, alienates or disenfranchises, no matter how hard some of them have been working to popularize said platform even while I've been acting in a hostile manner toward them using it.""
Some incredibly insightful comments here:

@kaniini I know where you stand.
"I'm going to ask you one last time, even if I feel like it's a waste of breath, to respect these people who are just trying to survive on your platform, some of whom, again, are still trying to get people to come to it even with you acting in ways that endanger them like this latest round of foolishness, and maybe start listening to them without being as condescending as you've been here, on the previous thread about this "feature", and elsewhere for months now."

@walialu That quote wasn't mine.
This project is a community effort.
We are a community having a conversation.
@walialu Can you stop tagging him back in?
Him being under fire is his own doing. It happens, and it's a recurring behaviour pattern from his side, unfortunately.
Yes, he's under fire, but it's because when we try to talk calmly and just ask politely he just dismiss us and shut us down, so sometimes we end up needing to get really loud to be heard.
That's not a very good argument though. You could just fork mastodon and make it without trends. @Gargron wants trends and he's the lead developer. It's his personal project and it shouldn't really matter what the people using it want, because if they really want it, they can just fork it, and we can continue to communicate with each other because we're still using open standards.
This argument is really a non-issue.
And for reference: I'm not in favor of trends. I'd prefer to not have them, but I think going about it in this way is completely wrong.
@rdh People are going about it this way, because it ends up being the only way to make ourselves heard, and others have done it in the past too, when they get tired of trying to reasonably have a discussion, where we just get dismissed and shut down.

my main concern isn't necessarily the abuse factor, but that is obviously a problem
my main concern is actually "social media influencers" abusing the feature to push their campaigns
