My brother is interested in front-end web development, is about halfway done with a comp sci degree, and is having difficulties with school. He's looking at a 8-10 week "coding bootcamp" and wondering what employers think of those.

Does it depend on the boot camp? Where could one go to find reliable reviews?

(boosts appreciated!)

@knittenkitten I'm currently in a 6mo-1yr bootcamp for UX where they try to place you at the end, but did research on the coding bootcamps before choosing to go more the design route.
From what I hear they can be pretty valuable to employers to see that you did a bootcamp if it's one that has a good reputation. as for review you'll have to do some internet sleuthing to find out if the place is reputable or a scam or whatever. There are certainly a lot of them about.

@knittenkitten I know the 1yr SE camp here covers both front end and back end and has a pretty decent reputation getting their students jobs so far, but it's a bit longer than what your bro is looking for. UX covers User Experience design and front end coding.

@roli_skates good to know! we know a lot of people who have a front end web dev career and are pretty happy with it, so he isn't too worried about missing out on back end stuff by taking a shorter course

(the bootcamp he was looking at appears to be on the reliable side based on what I'm getting in the replies, even though it is kind of new)

@knittenkitten oh rock on, which one is it?

@roli_skates they're a small, local outfit using the Code Fellows curriculum

(most of the negative reviews of that program seem centered around the more advanced software development programs this code school doesn't offer, not front end web development)

@knittenkitten
As someone who worked web dev for a decade, in my experience it couldnt hurt, but what they'll really be interested in is a portfolio that'll showcase what he can do.

I'd recommend he get a domain and some hosting, set up a bunch of examples what his skillset can do.

I've found employers care more about the kind of design that can be done over what your grades are.
