The Last of Us and Part 2 are both good games, but my emotional involvement in most never rose above detached admiration. “This is actually pretty well written, this is.” And I admire 2 for an ambitious, clever structure. But it just never moved me.
Meanwhile, Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami 2 and Yakuza: Like a Dragon all reduced me to a sobby tearful wreck. The storytelling is so damn good.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon spoilers
Holy SHIT. Like a Dragon created the most loathsome villain in Yakuza history, one I wanted dead more than any character in the franchise, and made me heartbroken when he died. Major credit to their writers, and to Kazuhiro Nakaya, who sells the hell out of the final scene. (As did the animation team.)
[He/Him.] Lefty librarian, used to be into games, now into depression and midlife crisis. All profile graphics by the amazing Nicky Case.
