Here's a Marcille for you on this blessed day
Okay here's a question:
how do you pronounce Marcille? I can think of two or three different ways that all seem equally plausible
Judging by the comments, I'm alone in thinking it's three syllables and uses the double-L as a /j/
Actually thinking about it more I"m not sure it has a /j/ in it at all the way I'm saying it, but also I never learned fuck about shit about French phonology
Something like [mɑ̃.si.j͜ɛ]
In Japanese it's Marushiru so now I have no fucking idea
@coriander ty i love when cute women
@trashguts@goblin.camp@coriander like marcy + lucille is how my brain says it
@trashguts That's what I thought at first but the more I look at it the more Frenchish it seems, which would extremely change how the double-L is pronounced
@trashguts@goblin.camp@coriander oh yeah i have no idea how french pronunciation works
@coriander without thinking too much, I would guess marr-SILL or marr-SEAL
@coriander in that case it is probably meant to rhyme with the english pronunciation of lucille?
@niss Yeah I think so
@coriander I can totally see three syllables, either as /j/ or as ending with lee
@coriander i'd intuitively go two syllables like in Marseille
@coriander i haven't Interacted with this Media™ but marSEE based on half-remembered french
@niss Okay you see it as potentially French too, nobody else has said anything about that and I was worried I was the only one =P
@coriander it looks extremely french to me and looking it up i am surprised that it is not a common real life name
@niss Her last name is Donato, which is NOT a French name at all, but tbh I think we can chalk that up to Manga Writing =P
@niss I guess that might make it an Italian realizaiton of the name rather than French?
But I think it would sound kinda similar between the two
@holly I went down a long rabbit hole and had to remember a ton of IPA characters before I thought to just look at how it's pronounced in Japanese and infer an English pronunciation from there
