@coriander what i like about pokémon is that if you play it enough in enough formats, eventually every poké becomes meaningful to you
like i used to think seismitoad was a terrible ugly pokémon and would never willingly catch one but then it became the centrepiece of my TCG deck and now i love it
i thought barbaracle was horrible and pointless but then while vacationing on the beach i caught a shiny one and it was extremely thematically appropriate

™ supreme goblin @coriander@Lady Yeah exactly! There's so many reasons why someone might like a Pokemon and a lot of times people will change their minds over time, it's great!
@coriander i liked the last series of pokémon anime (pokémon journeys) because Goh’s whole bit was trying to catch one of every kind of pokémon which meant it spent a lot of time showing this dorky pre-teen going “wow! so cool!” at all the just totally random forgotten pokémon in the back-catalogue

Another thing I like is that sometimes it's easy to come around on a pokemon.
Like originally? I thought Ratatta and Raticate were dumb and just for the youngsters you fight.
Raticates (sadly, not ratattas imo ;_; ) are positively adorable in Pokemon Sleep.
Pokemon sleep also made me really love Croagunk.
™ supreme goblin @coriander@lapis I used to think the key and ice cream Pokes were pretty stupid and a sign that designs had gotten bad but now I realize designs have always been bad and that having an entire evolutionary line that is just adding more keys whips, actually
@monorail@glaceon.social@lapis @coriander i've turned around on a lot of pokemon i never gave a hoot about because they were strong in OU or something and made me like them
@monorail@glaceon.social@lapis @coriander like i never thought about sableye once beyond "haha no weaknesses (except fairy when they added that)" but then i used prankster sableye in gen 6 OU and now i like sableye
@lapis@monorail @coriander I was actually writing an unrelated post about all the hate Gen V got at release (well, twice since it wasn't a global release). Like, To be clear, I LIKE Vanillite and Trubbish, not that I actually use them. But my point to a lot of the haters at the time is the designs are not inherently worse than Gen I (because Gen I is always the one spoken of as The Best. ) Like Grimer is literally a pile of sludge and you're complaining about Trubbish being a trash bag?
And Drowzee is just an abomination (abomnasnow) unto the Lord (Arceus).
I mean my frustration at the time was less "ugh this pokemon is ugly" but that the generation tried to do different shit and got knocked on for the same reason every gen gets knocked on: it's not the same game you played when you were 6.
Plus remember: this was the gen where I got diagnosed as Autistic so I was basically like "Uh excuse me N is the best character ever okay???"
